Where exactly is the Amarnath Cave? Amarnath is a 150 feet high and 90 feet long cave located nearly 145 km east of Srinagar. Located in a Himalayan glacial valley at a height of approximately 4,000m the cave has four ice formations, which are considered figurines of different Hindu gods. The biggest figure is regarded as that of Shiva. On the left side of the lingam there is an ice formation that is considered to be Ganesha. Similarly, formations representing Parvati and Bhairava are on the right side of the ice lingam. These formations are ice stalagmites, which wax during May to August and gradually wane thereafter. Legend has it that the lingam grows and shrinks with the phases of the moon, reaching its maximum height (more than 6 feet) on the full moon day of Shravan (Rakshabandhan day). It's believed that Lord Shiva first appeared in the cave on this day. Who discovered the cave? The temple is reported to be about 5,000 years old and people say it is even mentioned in ancient Hindu texts. However, exactly how the cave was discovered is unknown. One legend says that a Muslim shepherd named Buta Malik once met a saint who gave him a bag of coal, which turned into gold once Buta Malik reached his home. Overwhelmed by this miracle he went back to find the saint and discovered the cave instead. After the villagers learnt about this miracle, the cave became a place of pilgrimage. When does the yatra begin every year? Every year during the month of Shravan , J&K government organizes the Yatra and 3 to 4 lakh pilgrims brave severe weather conditions for a darshan of the ice lingam and offer prayers before it. Although surrounded by beautiful valleys, lakes and striking Himalayan flora, the 5-day trek to Amarnath, which is 40 miles back and forth is known for its uncertain climatic conditions. Rain is common and snowfall is not ruled out either. The temperature at times falls to as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius.
